AuThursday – Ashlyn Drewek

Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

My name is Ashlyn Drewek. I live in northern Illinois with my husband and my daughter. I have degrees in American History, but my actual day job is being a first responder. So I channel all of my odd loves, like history, and literature, and macabre things into my writing.

How do you make time to write?

It’s hard, especially when you work full time and have a family. When it’s slow at work, I squeeze in as much as I can. I also try to get some of it done either before my daughter wakes up or after she goes to sleep. Even if I’m not physically writing, I’m usually plotting in my head or figuring out scenes, so when I do get time at the computer, I can get it all out quickly.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yes, and no. I know what it’s like to not be inspired to write, but know you have to do it anyway. I also know what it’s like to have a vague concept/idea for a story or a character or a plot-line and you just have no freaking clue how to weave everything together to get your point across. That’s why I tend to have multiple stories going at once, so if I’m stuck on one, I can bounce to another and at least be productive in some sort of way.

Tell us a bit about the genre you write and why you love it.

At the heart of it all, I’m a romance writer. I love the interaction between couples, the push, the pull. I love all the warm fuzzies that go along with the newness of a relationship. But, more specifically, I write dark romance. Hallmark will never make one of my books into a movie, that’s for sure. I write about the paranormal, murderers, and mentally ill characters. I love tortured characters and “love” is the ultimate torture method.

How are you publishing your recent book and why? (*e.g. Indie, traditional)

Indie all the way. I am too, um, controlling shall we say, to turn my book baby over to an agency. I like working with my cover designer and formatting my own books and all of the behind-the-scenes work that goes along with it. Plus, the larger royalty payment is nice too.

Are you an Introvert or Extrovert?

Introvert. It’s great for the actual writing part. I’m quite comfortable sitting at a computer, whiling away the hours making up stories. Being an introvert only becomes an “issue” when it comes to promoting my work. I have a hard time “selling myself,” so that is something I’m working on.

What is your favorite motivational phrase?

“To write something you have to risk making a fool of yourself.”

~Anne Rice

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Do it! Don’t hold back. Write your first copy for yourself. Do NOT edit it until it’s finished. Be as crazy and outlandish and terrible as you want. Then, with each successive round of edits, tighten it up and polish it and present your originality to the world. There is literally an audience for every type of book, but you’ll never know if you don’t put your work out there for people to find.

From THE MYSTERY OF LEANDER WELLES, a dark, psychological romance about a criminal psychiatrist who falls in love with her patient.

“It’s ok to be afraid sometimes. Everyone has fears. It’s not a weakness. It’s human — a natural response to the threat of danger programmed into us over a millennia.”

He tilted his head, considering me. “What are you afraid of, Doctor?”

Blinking, my brows furrowed. I supposed I walked right into that one. “I don’t know. The usual things I guess. Snakes.”

He smirked. “That’s a phobia.”

Damn it. Leave it to Leander to know the difference. “You tell me since you’re so perceptive.”

“Failure.”

Nodding, I motioned for him to continue. I wanted to see how clever he thought he was.

He leaned forward, his exquisite gaze fixed on mine. “Surrender.”

The hair on the back of my neck stood up and my breath caught in my throat. “The last time we talked about surrender, we were talking about suicide. Are you having suicidal ideations again?”

He jumped to his feet. I stood just as swiftly, blocking his path. He moved in the other direction. I sidestepped with him, putting my hands up to help keep him from escaping. He could have easily shoved me away, but something about his mood this morning told me he wouldn’t.

“Let me see your arms, Leander.”

He scowled yet remained where he was.

I reached for his left wrist and touched it gently, hoping he didn’t explode. He let me lift his arm and take out the silver cuff-link, flinching only when I began pushing the sleeve out of my way. His chest rose and fell in quick succession the higher the fabric went. There were no new marks on his arms, just dozens of old scars.

I repeated the process on his other arm, satisfied to find fewer scars than the first. None of them were fresh. Nevertheless, I didn’t feel a sense of relief. “Are you cutting somewhere else? Somewhere you think I won’t look?”

“Would you like me to undress for you?” His words were so soft that if they weren’t being uttered near my ear, I might not have heard him.

“That’s—” I cleared my throat, staring straight ahead at the smooth whiteness of his throat. It was safer than looking up at his mouth or his eyes. “That’s not necessary.”

“I didn’t ask if it was necessary.” His fingertips grazed the side of my hand, trailing down the length of my pinky. He toyed with the very edges of my fingers, sending a spasm of yearning through me. The memory of his body against mine came back, along with the butterflies dive-bombing my stomach.

“Leander…”

I hated him from the moment I first saw him.

Those bright blue eyes brought reminders of my biggest regret, my greatest loss, the thing that tortured me and had me struggling for control.
Each time I pushed him, he pushed back. Each time he touched me, something in me broke.
He would be the death of me, but I couldn’t stop.
Diesel
Her brothers brought me into their family. Gave me the one thing I needed more than anything else. Then they asked me to do something I wasn’t sure I could.
Take care of her.
She was trouble wrapped up in a gorgeous package, but I wanted to wrap her in my arms. Soothe her worries, calm her fears, show her what it felt like to let go.
The fire between us ignited. But as the walls burned down around me, I’d be forced to choose between the life I’d always known and the love of my life.

Natalia stood in my way at the door, arms crossed at her chest. She was all power and authority, head held high like a princess. ’Cept the way she looked, her breasts pressed high, the dip between them on display like a gold medal prize? Took all I had not to drink her in. Not to rake my gaze over every last inch of her skin. The swell of her breasts. The smooth curve of her hips. That little pucker of her button bared at her midriff, just begging to be kissed.
My mouth dried up and my tongue grew thick. My body reacted with a twitch. Blood rushed south and my fingers itched to touch the fire that blazed deep in her eyes.
But I didn’t.
Couldn’t.
It was a hazard I couldn’t touch.
Trouble.
From day one, she was trouble.
My hair stood on end as I inched past her. Caught her gaze as she dragged her eyes up from my chest, but I pushed on, rushing past.
“You think I’m scared of you?” she questioned, voice like a bulldog as she chased me down the hall.
I stopped.
Turned.
Took a step backward into the wall as she pushed into my space.
“Nah, baby girl. You ain’t scared of no one but yourself.”
She took a step closer, hand pressed against my chest, shoving me into the cold cement. “What’s that supposed to mean?” she said on a scowl.
“Means whatever you need it to.”
She narrowed her eyes and I leaned toward her face. “You stand there looking down at me, judging from your tower? Pretending you ain’t got desire in your heart? I see you, little bird. You running scared from anything you can’t control.” My thumb dragged across her full bottom lip as a war raged behind those dark blue eyes.
Her lips parted. Her eyes closed. She sucked in a sharp breath.
Quick as a flash, her whole being awoke. She pulled back, swinging her fist at my face. I knocked it away, but she swung again. The back of her hand collided with my cheek, stunning me but not hurting too much. She swung again, harder this time. My hand caught hers, twisted her in her place. I swept my foot out, catching the leg that held her grounded to the floor.
Her tower toppled.
She began to fall.
I’d never let her break.
I pulled her back against my chest, one arm locked tight around her waist, my other arm pinning her arms across her chest. She squirmed. Raged. Energy crackled and snapped like electricity across a line. Her breath heaved, then held.
Her body melted against my own.
Felt every curve and swell as her heated body melded to mine. Felt that tension fade, the electricity sparking and holding strong. Felt the throb and twitch in my jeans against the tight curve of her ass. Felt her heartbeat pound out a steady beat against my chest.
I raised a shaky hand to her chin, tilting her face toward mine as I skimmed the tip of my nose along her cheek. Her quiet breaths came quick, her body leaning on me like she’d lost her strength. My lips brushed her skin, the taste of her so close.
“Don’t you worry, baby girl,” I whispered against her cheek, the tip of my tongue licking her sweat from my lips. “I’ll be here to catch you when you fall.”
She shuddered in my arms. Quick as it left her, that tension made a rebound. Shaking through her, rising up, an inferno devouring everything soft. It exploded out of her, her hands tearing at my skin as she made her escape.
Cold, cold eyes locked on mine. Her chest heaved, her face giving an angry twitch. Hands shoved hard at my chest and her gorgeous voice gave a quake as it tore through her throat. “Get away from me!”
She spun.
Ran, head down as she fled.
Like she couldn’t get away fast enough.

I shook my head, watching her go. Called after and her body jumped. “You keep pushing ever’body away, little bird, eventually there ain’t gonna be nobody left.”

Love is madness.

Love is anguish.
Ours was ill-fated from the beginning
Crazier than crazy.
Sicker than sick.
Samael was the epitome of a beautiful nightmare.
Together, we were poetry–the kind that bled and wept, a mess of euphoric bliss and heartbreak.
I promised I’d be by his side until the bitter end, but after far too long I needed to be free of him.
Leaving would be one of the hardest things I’d ever done.
He’d come after me, of that I was sure. Many would lose their lives, becoming casualties in our war.
When this was all said and done our story would be whispered in darkened corners for years to come.
A tale of a wolf pursuing a lamb, but with a masochistic twist.
For even lambs have teeth, and this one bites back.
*T-WARNING*
Miscreants is an enemies-to-lovers standalone full of explicit savagery and an OTT anti-hero. Some readers may find the content within objective. Discretion is highly advised!

Cover Reveal –

Title: The Beast of Boston
Author: J.L. Mac
Genre: Mob Romance (Dark)
Release Date: May 19, 2020
Cover Design: Robin Harper, Wicked by Design

“This is Beast. Beast is the size of a Volkswagen and has an impossible amount of buds and blooms. Beast also has thorns. But if you can sneak close enough to catch a whiff, and avoid the gnarly thorns, you’ll be ruined for all the other roses for the rest of your life. The sweetest, most addictive scent amongst the thorns.”
That’s what mom told my little sister and I once. She led us close enough to look but no further as she spoke of her favorite rosebush that she had affectionately named Beast.
That was a long time ago.
These days I know another Beast. A different kind of wild, untamed thing. He too is dangerous to get too close to. It’s unfortunate that I can’t afford to care, not when he’s the key to finding my sister.
They called him The Beast of Boston when he was a professional boxer. Now he rules over a bunch of criminals—the same criminals I hope will lead to my sister. I won’t stop until she’s found. I’ll get as close to Beast as it takes, gnarly thorns and all.
The problem is I’m so busy worrying for my own physical safety that I never considered how my heart would behave. Mom was right about one thing: I am ruined for all the roses for the rest of my life and it’s much too late to change it now.
***

My eyes find the printout of Carrick ‘The Beast of Boston’ Ferguson’s picture sitting in the passenger seat. It’s a newspaper article from a few years ago before he retired from professional boxing.

He’s in his iconic deep green, satin boxing shorts and has the coldest, most aloof stare. A shiver wracks my bones at the sight of those strange, dark eyes. My attention goes to his body. He’s big and has various tattoos here and there. The one inked in the center of his chest catches my attention and I wrinkle my brows trying to figure this one out. It’s odd to see a large tattoo across his chest of a fully bloomed red rose. The blood red petals are splayed wide showcasing the intricacies of the velvety blossom. The stem is thick and thorny with the little beasties that resemble shark teeth more than anything else. It’s a weird tattoo for a menacing man like him to sport. An unladylike snort slips out as I realize the paradox in front of me.

Mom used to have a rose bush that really was more like a tree. The damned thing was gargantuan. It flooded with vivid, deep, red blooms every spring and she personified the thing by naming it Beast. She originally gave it that name as homage to Lan’s favorite Disney movie. Lan used to beg Mom for a rose from Beast so she could put it under Mom’s upturned tea pitcher, pretending she was Belle in Beast’s castle attempting to see the man beneath the monster. Mom always carefully chose a long stem with a perfect bloom at its end and gave Lan the rose but forbade her from trying to touch it herself.

Thorns and all.

We used to walk out to the small garden behind our house with mom and watch her prune Beast while she’d tell us all about the looming presence. She used to say the same thing every year. She’d gather us close at her side and kneel down in front of Beast and get animated as she said, “This is Beast. Beast is the size of a Volkswagen and has an impossible amount of buds, and blooms a thousand or more. Beast also has thorns. Big ones. But if you can sneak close enough to catch a whiff, and avoid the gnarly thorns, you’ll be ruined for all the other roses for the rest of your life. The sweetest scent amongst the thorns.”

How funny that this monster—this Beast of Boston—is also gargantuan and happens to sport one lifelike red rose of his own. He too has thorns, just not the type you can see. His are hidden, and they’re that much more dangerous for it.

He’s a pretty monster.

That’s not quite accurate though. He’s not pretty. He’s beautiful. Well, if you can look past his thorns, that is. There isn’t a female on the planet that would deny him. I’m no fool. May as well call a spade a spade. The Beast of Boston is a hell of a man to look at. Being in the heavy weight division, he’s a mammoth of a man. The specs for his last prizefight—a fight he won, pocketing a substantial purse—says he weighed in at 218 pounds and towered at 6 feet 4 inches. He’s a solid foot taller than me and almost one hundred pounds heavier. The photo shows him at the weigh-in before the fight. Despite being a fighter, his face is enchanting, with sharp features and striking eyes. It’s only too bad that he’s rumored to be a fucking murderer and happens to be one of the leaders of the criminals who I suspect took my sister.
