AuThursday – Jeanne St. James

Please welcome fellow LSB author Jeanne St. James.  So Jeanne tell us,  do you use any techniques, tools, or aids to help you write?

Yes, a thesaurus. I love it. And I’ve also made up my own erotic thesaurus in an Excel spreadsheet. I’m always adding to it.

Q:  How do you make time to write?

Recently, I haven’t (and am feeling very guilty about that!). I’ve been busy promoting my three new releases with Liquid Silver Books, Phaze and Loose Id. I’m more creative in the evening and, unfortunately, I work in the evenings. So I need to either write after work or on my days off. It really limits my writing time. I’m NOT a morning person.

Q:  When you are writing, who is in control? You or your characters?

I would have to say my characters. I love to get into their heads and feel their emotions. It helps me write and I hope that comes through to the readers.

Q:  Who has had the most influence on your writing?

Hmm. Authors who love to write dark romances or damaged characters. I love damaged characters.

I would have to say my favorite authors are Katherine Sutcliffe and Laura Kinsale (their historical romances). I loved everything they wrote.

Q:  What advice do you have for other writers?

Keep writing. You can never write enough. The more you write, the more you learn and the better you get! Get a good critique partner, also. One who is going to be brutally honest with you.

Q:  Would you tell us your story of getting your first book published?

Well, I wrote Banged Up (my m/f erotic romance – Liquid Silver Books) a few years ago with the hopes of publishing with a big-name category romance publisher. I submitted it to several contests where it placed or won in its category. But I still never submitted it, since all I heard was how HARD it was to get in with this NY publisher. So I never tried. So, last fall, when I realized epublishing was here to stay – AND I was really enjoying the erotic romances that they were putting out there – I dusted the manuscript off, added a few more scenes including more explicit sex scenes and sent it off to several epubs. It was accepted by LSB and has received some GREAT reviews! I was very excited to have it accepted. I sold two more manuscripts within 6 months after that. I learned that all I had to do was submit. If you don’t do that, you will never be published.

*BTW, Banged Up is now on Amazon! I was so excited to see one of my books on such a big retailer.

Q:  What do you feel is the biggest misconception about erotic romance?

That it’s porn. It’s not it’s still a romance at heart. The heroine and the hero fall in love and even without the explicit sex scenes (which are hot and fun to write) the story should be able to stand alone.

Q:  What are you doing to promote your book(s)?

I maintain a website and blog. My blog gets a lot of hits because I try to promote it by having guest authors, recipes, excerpts, etc. I belong to the Romance Divas forum and lots of writer/reader email loops. I do blog tours, chats, and loads of interviews. I think getting good reviews on my books helps promotion, too.

Q:  What books can we expect to see in the near future?

I just had a January 5th release with Loose Id. An interracial ménage a trois (m/m/f). Its title is Double Dare. It was a lot of fun to write. I am working on some other stories, but I really need to get “butt in chair” and write.

Q:  Where can readers find you on the World Wide Web?

All over. LOL! I’ll just list a few. Some of the best places are:

 My website: http://www.jeannestjames.com

My blog: http://jeannestjames.blogspot.com

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jeannestjames

Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/jeannestjames

Join me on Saturday when Jeanne shares an excerpt from her newest release, “Double Dare”.

Until then be Naughty,

Tina
