Please Welcome Eden Monroe to the Clog Blog! Eden, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I grew up on the East Coast of Canada, a country girl who became a city girl and then eventually got re-countrified. I am a former legal assistant and I worked for many years as a freelance newspaper reporter. I like to hike, travel, am an avid reader, and dabble in quilting.
How do you make time to write?
I re-careered after taking early retirement as a legal assistant and have been writing full-time for many years. For a long time, I basically worked two full-time jobs: 8:30 to 4:30 in the legal department, and the rest of the time (except for a few hours to sleep) was spent writing, chasing down stories for my various columns. I have had incredible experiences as a writer.
Do you believe in writer’s block?
Yes, but only because I know of a few great writers who experience it for one reason or another, i.e. severe personal loss or some other life-altering event. I have been very fortunate in that I’ve never experienced writer’s block. I will say that there is a greater depth of creativity on some days more than others, but usually, my fingers have to work very fast to keep up with what I am imagining. I find early morning to be a very creative time for me.
Tell us a bit about the genre you write and why you love it.
The genre I write is romantic suspense, a storyline that involves romance combined with a mystery/thriller plot. I fell quite naturally into the romantic suspense genre because I am a true romantic at heart I guess, and love that age-old pull. Romance is the cornerstone of most people’s existence. Where would we be without it? Everything from cartoons to commercials has romantic elements. I think what makes writing romantic suspense so interesting for me, is including those elements along with a healthy dose of suspense which deepens the tension of the story.
How are you publishing your recent book and why?
I have gone the traditional route with all sixteen of my novels, BWL Publishing Inc., and it truly helps in this highly competitive industry to know that a publisher has your back. An author has to constantly be searching for marketing opportunities, whether they’re published traditionally or independently, and it’s a great help to have your publisher working to assist you as much as possible in that regard. You really do feel as though you’re part of a team and I feel very fortunate to be with BWL.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert? How does this affect your work?
I think I’m somewhere in the middle. I’m a loner, which bodes well for the sole pursuit of writing. I’m very introspective. I love my own company and require an enormous amount of alone time. I’m never happier than when I’m alone with a book, either reading one or writing one. However, when I worked as a freelance newspaper/magazine reporter I met and interviewed hundreds of people, and enjoyed every minute of it. I have also done a fair bit of public speaking and have no trouble getting up in front of people to do that. So the introvert part of me is comfortable with the long hours spent alone, writing, and the extrovert part of me helps with marketing.
What is your favourite motivational phrase?
I have a few, but I would say the one I think of most often would be:
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” (Henry Ford)
What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?
The first thing I’d say to an aspiring writer is, what are you waiting for? Do it! Get started. Getting that first sentence, or paragraph or chapter on paper can be a huge step, but if you never start, how can you possibly expect to finish? I would also say educate yourself in the craft you’re about to become involved with and read relentlessly. There’s no better way to fuel your imagination.

Excerpt
The old dog, soaked from a tumble into the icy water and limping badly, continued to pick its way along the creek that rushed between steep boulder-strewn banks. Beau Remington, far above on horseback, spotted the bedraggled canine and quickly dismounted, clamouring down the embankment toward it. With one arm wrapped around a sturdy yellow birch to anchor himself, he stretched forward to scoop up the small dog and slipped it inside his jacket. Steadying the terrified animal with one hand he then began the climb back up to the trail where his horse, Chance, waited patiently.
He talked to the dog soothingly, the rich timbre of his voice comforting as the shivering slowly began to subside within the warmth of leather on a cool spring day. Beau urged the gelding into a trot for the final half-mile to his ranch nestled deep in the rolling hills of Belleisle, New Brunswick, Canada’s picture province. He loved the quiet solitude, but soon the area would have some unlikely visitors when they started shooting the movie, Retribution, a few miles up the road. As a veterinarian, he’d already agreed to be on set when animals were scheduled to appear in the movie, so it should be an interesting experience.
The dog whimpered plaintively against him, reigniting Beau’s anger at the insensibility of some selfish, cold-hearted pet owners. This had definitely been a dump, an old dog, half-blind, and likely no longer wanted. The poor thing had either been lame before being abandoned or injured in the fall, and it was because of situations like this that he’d dedicated his life to animals.

I’m a science and writing geek. Seriously, I was educated as a scientist. I’ve always written, and I’ve enjoyed writing, from the high school newspaper to technical scientific articles. I started writing my first mystery about 1995 after making a New Year’s resolution to stop watching television and make better use of my time. “Where Evil Hides” was published by a small press in 2000. That’s been followed by 32 other mysteries. “Family Trees” won the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award for best fiction in 2016. I joined BWL Publishing in 2019 and have been among their best-selling authors ever since.
